Ruth and Naomi’s relationship is perhaps the emblematic narrative on social intimacy in the Torah. In this session, we shall consider the concept of deveikut or cleaving using midrashic and psychoanalytic sources. While we are all grappling with social distancing, we shall consider the meanings and vicissitudes of intimate friendship with another and wonder – can the world survive without it?
